Articles with Time Expressions Exercises
B1 Level
English has specific rules for articles with time words. Parts of the day use "the" with "in": "in the morning," "in the afternoon," "in the evening." The big exception is "at night" — this fixed phrase never uses "the." Days of the week normally take no article: "on Monday," "on Friday." But when you refer to one specific day, "the" is needed: "Do you remember the Monday we first met?"
Seasons follow a similar pattern: no article for general use ("I love summer," "It rains in winter") but "the" for a specific season ("the summer of 2020 was very hot"). Words like "last," "next," and "every" remove any article: "last week," "next month," "every year" — adding "the" before these is a common mistake. Years and dates also take no article: "in 2024," "on 15th March." These small details are frequently tested in Cambridge B1 and B2 examinations, especially in open cloze and gap-fill exercises where one missing word changes the meaning entirely.
