Do So / Do It / Do That Exercises

Do so, do it, and do that replace a repeated verb phrase, but they do not sound the same. Use do so in formal, professional, academic, or official contexts: "Applicants may update their details online, and many choose to do so." It keeps the sentence concise without sounding conversational. Use do it when the action is practical, informal, or task-focused: "The shelf needs fixing, so I will do it tonight." Use do that when you point back to a specific action, choice, or behaviour, especially when reacting to it: "He left without paying; why did he do that?"

The form changes with tense and structure: do so, does so, did so, done so, and doing so. Formal phrases such as "failure to do so" and "those wishing to do so" are common in notices and policies. In conversation, do it often feels more natural than do so. Choose the substitute that matches both the repeated action and the register of the sentence.
