It-Cleft Time, Place & Reason Exercises

B2 Level

It-cleft sentences can also focus on adverbial information — specifically when, where, and why something happened. The pattern follows the same core structure: It was + time/place/reason + that + clause. For example, "I met her in London" becomes "It was in London that I met her," shifting the emphasis to the place. Similarly, "The accident happened on Tuesday" transforms to "It was on Tuesday that the accident happened." This type of it-cleft is common in storytelling and formal reports where precise details deserve emphasis.

For reason focus, the pattern uses "because" or "because of": "It was because of the heavy rain that the match was cancelled." You can also use the special form "It was not until..." to emphasise a delayed action: "It was not until midnight that the last guests left." This structure is one of the most frequently tested cleft forms in Cambridge B2 First and C1 Advanced exams. Remember that "that" is the standard connector for adverbial it-clefts, though "when" and "where" are sometimes used informally.
