Combining Sentences: Possession and Place

B1-B2 Level

This exercise focuses on combining sentences using whose, where, and when — three relative pronouns that many learners find more challenging than "who" or "which." Use whose to replace possessive words like "his," "her," or "their": "I met a woman. Her daughter is a famous actress" becomes "I met a woman whose daughter is a famous actress." Use where to replace place references: "This is the city. I was born here" becomes "This is the city where I was born."

For time references, use when: "I remember the day. We first met then" becomes "I remember the day when we first met." A key point: with where and when, you must remove the place or time word from the second sentence — "the city where I was born here" is wrong because "where" already means "here." Similarly, with whose, remove the possessive: "a woman whose her daughter" is wrong. These three pronouns are frequently tested in Cambridge B1 and B2 sentence-transformation exercises, so careful practice now will help you in exams.

Quick Rule

whose (replaces his/her/their) / where (replaces here/there) / when (replaces then/at that time) / that (general replacement)

  • 1.I met a man whose wife is a famous singer. (whose replaces "his")
  • 2.That is the school where I studied as a child. (where replaces "there")
  • 3.I will never forget the moment when I heard the news. (when replaces "then")
  • 4.The person that helped me was very kind. (that replaces "he/she" — general use)
  • 5.She doesn't remember the year when she started school. (when — negative sentence)
