Long Superlatives (the most) Exercises
A2 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
The most common mistake is adding -est to a long adjective. Forms such as "expensivest" and "beautifulest" are not standard English. Another error is dropping "the" before "most" in a complete superlative phrase. Write "the most comfortable chair", not "most comfortable chair", unless the phrase follows a possessive or another determiner. Some two-syllable adjectives can vary, but "the most" is a safe choice for adjectives like modern, careful, useful, and famous. This exercise helps you choose the long-adjective pattern quickly and accurately.
Quick Rule
the most + long adjective | the most + many two-syllable adjectives | not the most + adjective for negative statements
- 1.This is the most expensive restaurant in the city. (the most + long adjective)
- 2.Her answer was the most important point in the discussion. (the most + long adjective)
- 3.That was not the most interesting film I watched this year. (negative with the most + adjective)
- 4.Is this the most comfortable seat on the train? (the most + long adjective in a question)
- 5.This is the most useful app on my phone. (the most + two-syllable adjective)
