Short Superlatives (-est) Exercises
A2 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
Many short adjectives simply add -est, but spelling still matters. If the adjective ends in -e, add -st rather than -est: large → the largest. Some one-syllable adjectives ending in consonant + short vowel + consonant double the final consonant: big → the biggest, hot → the hottest. This route mainly builds speed with common forms such as the longest, the smallest, the loudest, and the strongest. Do not use "most" with these regular short adjectives in standard learner English: write "the fastest", not "the most fast".
Quick Rule
the + short adjective + -est | the + short adjective ending in -e + -st | short adjective ending consonant + short vowel + consonant doubles final consonant + -est
- 1.My brother is the tallest person in our family. (regular short adjective + -est)
- 2.This is the coldest winter we have had in ten years. (regular short adjective + -est)
- 3.That is not the safest road to the airport. (short adjective ending in -e, negative)
- 4.Is the blue bag the lightest one on the shelf? (regular short adjective + -est)
- 5.This is the biggest room in the hotel. (short vowel pattern doubles the final consonant)
