Superlative Spelling Changes Exercises
A2 Level
English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
These spelling changes help keep the pronunciation and written form clear. The doubling rule does not apply to every short adjective: fast becomes the fastest because it ends in two consonants, and clean becomes the cleanest because it has two vowels before the final consonant. The y-to-i rule normally applies after a consonant, not after a vowel, so grey can become the greyest in British English. Do not change the adjective twice. Write "the biggest", "the happiest", and "the nicest", not "the bigest", "the happyest", or "the niceest".
Quick Rule
the + short adjective ending consonant + short vowel + consonant with doubled final consonant + -est | the + consonant-y adjective changed to -iest | the + adjective ending in -e + -st
- 1.This is the biggest suitcase in the cupboard. (short vowel pattern doubles the final consonant)
- 2.Monday is the busiest day in our shop. (consonant + y changes to -iest)
- 3.That was not the nicest thing to say. (silent -e adjective takes -st, negative)
- 4.Is this the simplest solution to the problem? (adjective ending in -e takes -st)
- 5.January was the saddest month in the story. (short vowel pattern doubles the final consonant)
