English Exercises is teacher-led by Charlie. About the teacher · How content is made
Use a quick decision process. First, decide whether the sentence is choosing one item from a group; clues include "in the class", "of all", "I have ever", and "in the world". Next, check the adjective. One syllable usually takes -est, longer adjectives usually take "the most", and common irregular adjectives need special forms. Then check spelling: big → the biggest, happy → the happiest, nice → the nicest. Finally, make sure the sentence does not contain a double form such as "the most easiest" or a missing article before the superlative.
Quick Rule
the + short adjective + -est | the most + long adjective | spelling changes (biggest/happiest/nicest) | irregular forms (best/worst/furthest/most/least)
- 1.She is the tallest student in her class. (short adjective + -est)
- 2.This is not the most expensive hotel in the city. (negative with the most + long adjective)
- 3.That was the best meal I have ever had. (irregular superlative)
- 4.He is the happiest person I know. (y changes to i before -est)
- 5.Is this the hottest day of the summer? (short vowel pattern doubles the final consonant)
