Whatever and Whoever Exercises
B2 Level
Whatever and whoever introduce open choices when the exact
thing or person is unknown, unimportant, or unrestricted. Use whatever for things,
actions, ideas, prices, colours, and situations: "Bring whatever you need" means any suitable
thing is acceptable. Use whoever for people: "Whoever answers the phone should take
a message" means any person who answers, not one named person.
These words often mean anything that, anyone who, or no matter what/who. They can begin a sentence, follow a verb, or sit after a preposition. Pay attention to the noun idea in the sentence: food, tools, prices, and actions take whatever; callers, winners, visitors, and applicants take whoever. In negative instructions, the open meaning still applies: "Whatever you do, do not press that button" warns against one action while allowing every other possible action. This exercise builds quick recognition of person versus thing contexts in sentences. It also prepares you for mixed wh-ever choices later.
