The key question is whether the sentence gives a defined group. "Take whichever laptop fits your budget" points to specific laptops already mentioned. "Buy whatever you need" leaves the possible items open. Whichever often appears with one, option, candidate, route, or colour after a number or list. Whatever often follows verbs such as do, need, want, say, and happen when no list is given. In negatives, keep the same logic: "Do not choose whichever option is unavailable" still refers to a set; "Whatever happens, do not panic" refers to unrestricted outcomes. This limited-set test prevents most errors in this route.
