Wherever and Whenever Exercises

B2 Level

Wherever and whenever extend place and time meanings beyond one specific location or moment. Use wherever for places: "Sit wherever you like" means any available place is acceptable. Use whenever for times and occasions: "Call whenever you need help" means at any suitable time. Both words can also mean no matter where or no matter when.

The context usually gives clear clues. Seats, offices, gardens, streets, and hiding places point to wherever. Feelings, repeated events, visits, rain, and moments in the day point to whenever. These words often introduce flexible rules or repeated habits: "Whenever it rains, the road floods" describes something that happens each time. In negative clauses, the same distinction remains: "Do not park wherever there is no sign" is about place, while "Do not call whenever the baby is asleep" is about time. This exercise trains the place versus time decision accurately. The surrounding noun or verb usually gives the safest clue.
