Mixed Word Order Practice Exercises
A2-B2 Level
Mixed word order practice brings together the main sentence-order patterns in
the word-order module. You may need basic SVO statements, SVOMPT statements, adverbs of
frequency, direct questions, embedded questions, or adjective order. The first step is to decide
what kind of sentence you are building. A statement, direct question, embedded question, and noun
phrase with adjectives all use different ordering rules.
Work from the centre of the sentence outward. For statements, find the subject and verb first. For questions, look for the helper verb and subject. For embedded questions, keep statement order after the question word. For adjective phrases, put the noun last and arrange the adjectives before it. Because this page mixes A2 to B2 patterns, do not assume the previous question gives the pattern for the next one. Read the words, identify the structure, build the sentence, then check punctuation and capital letters.
