SVOMPT Word Order Exercises
B1 Level
SVOMPT is a useful memory pattern for longer English statements:
Subject + Verb + Object + Manner + Place + Time. It helps you arrange extra
information after the main verb and object. For example, "They played football happily in the
park yesterday" follows the order action first, then how, where, and when. English does allow
some movement for emphasis, but this pattern is the safest neutral order for many B1 sentences.
The most important rule is to keep the object close to the verb. Say "She read the letter carefully", not "She read carefully the letter" in normal neutral English. After the object, manner phrases often come before place, and place often comes before time. Time can also move to the beginning when you want to set the scene, but this page practises the standard order. Mastering SVOMPT makes writing clearer because each extra phrase has a natural position.
