Question Formation Advanced Word Order Exercises

B1-B2 Level

Advanced question word order compares subject questions, object questions, and more complex question forms. In an object question, the question word is the object, so you need helper-subject order: "Who did you meet?" In a subject question, the question word is the subject, so the sentence often keeps statement-like order: "Who told you?" This difference is a major B1-B2 word-order trap.

Advanced questions may also include longer prepositional phrases, perfect or continuous forms, and embedded-question elements. Start by asking what the question word represents. If it asks about the person or thing doing the action, it may be a subject question and may not need do. If it asks about the object, place, reason, or time, you usually need a helper before the subject. This page helps you choose the structure from meaning, not only from the first word of the question.
