About, Of, From Exercises

B1 Level

About, of, and from connect nouns and ideas in different ways. Use about for a topic or subject: a book about grammar, talk about the plan, worried about the exam. It also means approximately with numbers and time: about 50 people, in about ten minutes. Use of for parts, portions, possession, visible material, and qualities: a cup of coffee, most of my friends, a friend of mine, made of wood, the smell of coffee.

Use from for origin, source, starting point, and separation: from Canada, learn from mistakes, the train from London, and different from. Some choices depend on meaning rather than the noun alone: made of wood means the material is still visible, while made from grapes means the original material has changed. This B1 practice also includes accepted British English alternatives such as different to, while keeping different from as the preferred exam-safe answer for international tests and formal writing.
