Causative Final Test

B1-B2 Level

This comprehensive test covers all aspects of the "have/get something done" structure, from basic transformations to advanced forms. You will be tested on changing the tense of "have" (present, past, future, perfect, continuous), creating negative and question forms, recognising when the structure describes a service versus an unwanted experience, and working with "have someone do" and "get someone to do" patterns involving people and different types of infinitive.

To do well, remember these key points: the object and past participle never change when you switch tenses — only "have" or "get" changes. For negatives, use "didn't have" or "haven't had." When the structure describes a negative experience ("I had my phone stolen"), context tells you it was unplanned. The difference between "have someone do" (instruction with authority) and "get someone to do" (persuasion) is tested at higher levels. Questions are arranged from easier to more challenging, so work through them carefully and use this test to identify which areas need more practice.

Quick Rule

have / get + object + past participle | have + person + bare infinitive | get + person + to-infinitive

  • 1.I had my car serviced before the long journey. (basic service — past simple)
  • 2.She is getting her kitchen redesigned this month. (service in progress — present continuous)
  • 3.We didn't have the report checked before the deadline. (negative — missed service)
  • 4.He had the technician install the new software. (person + bare infinitive — instruction)
  • 5.She got her colleague to cover her shift at the last minute. (person + to-infinitive — persuasion)
