Noun + FOR, TO & OF Exercises (Part 3)
B2-C1 Level
This advanced exercise tests noun + for, to, and
of combinations without giving you options to choose from — you must recall the
correct preposition from memory. This recall format is harder than multiple choice because you
cannot eliminate wrong answers, and it mirrors how you need to use these phrases in real writing
and speaking. You will encounter combinations such as exception to, similarity to,
cost of, preparation for, and contribution to — all common in academic
and professional English.
At B2-C1 level, you are expected to use noun + preposition phrases accurately and automatically in essays, reports, and discussions. One area that causes particular difficulty is nouns that look like they should take "of" but actually take "to": exception to (not "exception of"), alternative to (not "alternative of"), and approach to (not "approach of"). Similarly, preparation for is correct (not "preparation to" or "preparation of"). Building automatic recall of these phrases is essential for Cambridge C1 Advanced and IELTS Writing Task 2, where accurate use of complex language is expected.
