Mixed Preposition Practice Exercises

B1-B2 Level

This mixed practice exercise tests your knowledge of all major preposition types together: time prepositions (in, on, at, for, since), place prepositions (in, on, at), movement prepositions (to, into, onto, through, across), and dependent prepositions that follow specific verbs, adjectives, and nouns (depend on, interested in, reason for). When different preposition rules appear side by side, choosing the correct one becomes more challenging because you must identify what type of meaning each sentence requires.

The key to improving is to identify the context first. Ask yourself: is this about time, place, movement, or a fixed phrase? Time prepositions follow the size pattern (in for months and years, on for days, at for times). Place prepositions depend on whether the location is an enclosed space, a surface, or a specific point. Dependent prepositions must simply be learnt as part of the verb, adjective, or noun they belong to — there is no rule to predict them. Practising with mixed exercises builds the flexibility needed for Cambridge B1 Preliminary and B2 First examinations, where prepositions from every category appear together.

  • 3.He walked through the park and sat on a bench. (movement + place)
  • 4.We don't depend on anyone for financial help. (dependent — verb + preposition)
  • 5.The train arrives at platform 6 at quarter to nine. (place + time)
