Verb + Preposition Part 1 Exercises

B1 Level

Many common English verbs are followed by a fixed preposition. These are called dependent prepositions because the preposition belongs to the verb: depend on, wait for, listen to, look at, belong to, and concentrate on. The meaning often cannot be predicted from the preposition alone, so the safest method is to learn each verb and preposition together as one phrase. For example, English says "depend on a result", not "depend of a result".

This B1 exercise focuses on high-frequency combinations that learners need in everyday speaking and writing. Some verbs take different prepositions when the meaning changes: look at means direct your eyes, look for means search, and look after means take care of someone or something. Other items test whether you can separate the person from the topic: talk to someone, but talk about a subject. Regular practice builds memorisation through complete sentences, which is more reliable than trying to translate from your first language.
