Inversion is a grammatical structure where we reverse the normal subject-verb order, placing the auxiliary verb before the subject. This creates formal emphasis and is essential for B2-C1 level exams like Cambridge CAE and CPE.

Inversion is triggered by specific words and phrases at the beginning of a sentence. These include negative adverbials, "only" expressions, conditional structures without "if", and correlative conjunctions.

The basic pattern is: Trigger word + Auxiliary + Subject + Main Verb. For tenses without an auxiliary (present/past simple), add do/does/did.

Both structures express that two events happened almost simultaneously. The key difference is the connector: "No sooner" pairs with "than", while "Hardly" and "Scarcely" pair with "when".
"No sooner had I arrived than it started raining."
"Hardly had I sat down when the phone rang."
Memory tip: "No sooner" ends with R, "than" starts with TH (both have "N" sound). "Hardly/Scarcely" go with "when" (W sounds).
Remove "if" and invert the auxiliary verb with the subject. This creates a more formal register and is common in written English, especially legal and academic texts.

When a sentence starts with "Not only", inversion happens only in the first clause. The second clause ("but also") keeps normal word order. This structure adds equal emphasis to both elements.
Normal:
"She sings beautifully. She also plays piano."
Inverted:
"Not only does she sing beautifully, but she also plays piano."
Common mistake: Don't invert both clauses! Only the first clause after "Not only" is inverted.
Most learners struggle with forgetting to add the auxiliary, using the wrong connector, or applying inversion when it's not needed.

Inversion is primarily formal English. It appears frequently in academic writing, legal documents, literature, and formal speeches. Native speakers rarely use it in everyday conversation, except for a few fixed expressions.
